About The Westmorland Orchestra

Chair: Georgina Perkins:

Music Director: Melvin Tay

Leader: Pamela Redman

The Westmorland Orchestra gave its first concert as part of the Mary Wakefield Westmorland Music Festival on 1 May 1946.  The membership is made up of over 60 dedicated amateur musicians who rehearse weekly in Kendal from September to May and give three public concerts a year. In its performances of large-scale works, professional musicians augment the orchestra – particularly in the percussion section!  It presents the full range of the established symphony concert repertoire, and also newer, lesser-known works of the 20th and the 21st century. It actively supports and encourages young musicians embarking on a professional career.

We rehearse and perform in Kendal, Cumbria on the southern edge of the Lake District. Kendal was once part of the old county of Westmorland, a name proudly maintained by the Westmorland Orchestra.  The Orchestra is grateful for the support it receives from Making Music and South Lakeland District Council. However, in times of rapid cost escalation it simply could not continue to exist without the generous support of its many Patrons.

Applications for membership are always welcome; both from players and from those who would like to become involved in the Orchestra by supporting and furthering its activities; perhaps assisting with admin and promotion or as a Patron or subscriber.
