Westmorland Orchestra Concert

Westmorland Hall, Saturday 13th March 2010

The Westmorland Orchestra’s concert in the Westmorland Hall on 13 March was the first under the orchestra’s newly-appointed conductor, Richard Howarth. Richard is highly-respected as a leader and conductor of many professional orchestras.  If the concert on 13th March was any guide to the future, it is a partnership that will work well.

The concert began with a performance of Beethoven’s Overture ‘Fidelio’ This had some insecure moments at the outset: the wind ensemble was less secure than usual and there was some suspect intonation in the lower strings. However, after these initial uncertainties, the orchestra went on to give a spirited performance.

Lithuanian-born violinist, Diana Galvydyte, was the outstanding young soloist in Max Bruch’s glorious Violin Concerto. The romantic fervour which she brought to the work, coupled with her warm tone, the lyricism of her melodic lines, and of course, technical virtuosity charmed the audience.

Brahms’s third symphony completed the programme. It had some lovely moments, the tranquil second movement in particular showing great attention to detail. It was clear that many hours of careful rehearsal had gone into this performance.
