Saturday 13th March 2010 Soloist: Diana Galvydyte
‘If at first you don’t succeed…..’
– four overtures and a
change of title before Beethoven was satisfied with his only opera and its
energetic and powerful overture, ‘Fidelio’. Max Bruch’s 1st Violin Concerto has been at or near the top of
the Classic FM ‘Hall of Fame’ for years. Bruch himself was
puzzled as to why his other violin concertos were neglected – perhaps
the slow movement of the first provides the answer. Brahms’ personal motto ‘frei aber froh’ (FAF -
‘free but happy’) features throughout this energetic, powerful
but sometimes wistful symphony. Diana Galvydyte was born in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1984. In 2000 she
was invited to the Yehudi Menuhin School in England, and is currently
studying at the Royal College of Music. She has performed extensively
throughout Europe, also in Canada. She has been a prize-winner in no less
than 15 international competitions. She was a winner of the 2007 Award for
Young Concert Artists, supported by Making Music. |
